Life insurance is a contract between you and a life insurance company where you pay premiums (monthly or annually) for a payment your living relatives will receive after your death, called a death benefit. If you die, the insurance company pays the death benefit to the beneficiary of your choice.

There are two types of life insurance: permanent life insurance and term life insurance. Both may require a medical examination as part of an approval process known as underwriting. The underwriting process can take four to six weeks and once approved you will receive your policy. There are a few dates to look out for when you get your policy, especially the effective date.

The underwriting process is how the insurance company determines your cover – deciding how much of a risk you are and what death benefits you qualify for. The insurance company collects information about your health, work, income, finances and other personal information to decide how much they will cover you for and what premium you will receive.

The effective date is the date the life insurance starts. If your effective date is September 1, 2021 and you die before then, your policy will not pay your beneficiaries. If you die after that date, your policy will pay your beneficiaries.

While the effective date is the day your coverage begins, the issue date is the date your policy was issued to you for acceptance. You can accept or decline the policy. If you die between the issue date and the effective date, your beneficiaries will not receive your death benefit unless you have chosen temporary cover.

If you do not have a previous life insurance policy, some insurance companies will provide conditional or temporary life insurance until the underwriting process is complete.

If you’re underwriting a traditional life insurance policy and your provider offers temporary coverage at the time, you may want to consider it so you know you’re covered while you wait. You pay a regular premium and if you die while insured, your beneficiaries will receive your death benefit. It ends once you are approved for full coverage.

If you have a guaranteed or simplified life insurance policy, there is usually a two-year waiting period. Guaranteed life insurance is sometimes called “final expense” insurance because the coverage amounts are so low that they primarily cover funeral expenses only.

Guaranteed and simplified life insurance policies are life insurance policies without a medical examination. Since there is no medical exam, you are at greater risk to the insurance company. Some insurance companies have a two year waiting period for these policies.

If you die within the first two years of coverage, the policy will not pay out. So if your effective date is September 1, 2021, your beneficiaries will not receive a death benefit unless you die after September 1, 2023. Check with your insurer to see if you have a waiting period of two years.

Most insurance companies have a “competition” period. The challenge period varies by carrier, but is usually one to two years from the effective date. According to AARP, if you die within the first two years of coverage, the insurance company may request your medical history regarding your death.

The competition period differs from the two-year waiting period for guaranteed issue and simpler issue life insurance policies. If the insured is found to have lied on the application or not disclosed important facts, the insurance company can cancel the policy.

When you have permanent life insurance, your cover lasts for life. However, when you have term life insurance, it lasts for a set period of time—5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 years—and must be renewed after that, so it’s less expensive than permanent life insurance. .
